Perna perna (Linné, 1758) occurs on the Atlantic littoral from Venezuela to Uruguay. The main organ systems were studied in the living animais, particular attention being paid to the ciliary feeding and cleansing mechanisms in the mantle cavity. The anatomy, functioning of the stomach and the ciliary sorting mechanisms are described. The siphons belong to type A (Yongf. 1948b), the ctenidia to type B( 1) (Atkins 1936c) and the stomach is of type III (Purchon 1957) or Section I (Dinamani 1967) with sorting mecanisms of type A and B (Reid 1965). A general comparison was made between the genera of the Mytilidae known and some features of Mytella Soot-Ryen, 1955.

Dual symbiosis in a Bathymodiolus sp mussel from a methane seep on the gabon continental margin (southeast Atlantic): 16S rRNA phylogeny and distribution of the symbionts in gills ArchiMer

Deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) harbor symbiotic bacteria in their gills and are among the dominant invertebrate species at cold seeps and hydrothermal vents. An undescribed Bathymodiolus species was collected at a depth of 3,150 m in a newly discovered cold seep area on the southeast Atlantic margin, close to the Zaire channel. Transmission electron microscopy, comparative 16S rRNA analysis, and fluorescence in situ hybridization indicated that this Bathymodiolus sp. lives in a dual symbiosis with sulfide- and methane-oxidizing bacteria. First Indonesian record of Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau et al., 1968 (Bivalvia: Mytilidae), endosymbiont of Fungia spp. (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) Naturalis

The mytilid bivalve Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau, Goreau, Neumann & Yonge, 1968, previously mistakenly referred to as F. eilatensis Soot-Ryen, 1969, is reported for the first time from Indonesia. It lives as an obligate endosymbiont of mushroom corals, particulary Fungia spp., reef-dwelling corals restricted to the tropical Indo-Pacific. Notes are given on its association with different host species, its habitat, its biogeography, and its possible competition with endosymbiotic gastropods belonging to the genus Leptoconchus (Coralliophilidae).

Influence of CH4 and H2S availability on symbiont distribution, carbon assimilation and transfer in the dual symbiotic vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus ArchiMer

High densities of mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus are present at hydrothermal vents of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It was previously proposed that the chemistry at vent sites would affect their sulphide- and methane-oxidizing endosymbionts' abundance. In this study, we confirmed the latter assumption using fluorescence in situ hybridization on Bathymodiolus azoricus specimens maintained in a controlled laboratory environment at atmospheric pressure with one, both or none of the chemical substrates. Integrative study of a new cold-seep mussel (Mollusca: Bivalvia) associated with chemosynthetic symbionts in the Marmara Sea ArchiMer

Recently, small Idas-like mussels have been discovered living on carbonate crusts associated with cold-seeps in the Marmara Sea. These mussels, here referred to as Idas-like nov. sp., differ morphologically and genetically from another species identified as Idas aff. modiolaeformis, living in the same type of ecosystem in the Nile Deep-Sea Fan (eastern Mediterranean Sea). A phylogenetic analysis confirms the distinction between the two species, which belong to highly divergent lineages. La reproduction des mollusques bivalves en écloserie ArchiMer

Optimal gametogenesis and egg-laying environment, fertility, number of egg-layings, reproductor ageing, relationship between parent characteristics and conditioning and farming success, are the main issues considered by bivalve hatcheries each time the reproduction of a species is taken care of. Even if there is still very little bibliographic data on this precise field, reproduction mechanisms have been studied for decades in Mytilidae and Ostreidae. Largely cultivated in open sea, they are indeed an experimental material of choice. In this paper, we will see how the acquired knowledge and the methods developed on this material can be used to carry out a study on bivalve reproduction in hatcheries.

Bivalve species of the mytilid genus Lithophaga, including a new one, are recorded from Indonesian mushroom corals (Scleractinia, Fungiidae). True associations with live hosts including L. laevigata, L. lessepsiana, L. lima, L. punctata spec. nov., and L. simplex, while specimens of L. malaccana and L. mucronata have been found in bore holes in encrusted or dead parts of infested corals.

Mytilus antiquorum J. Sowerby, 1821 and other Pliocene mussels (Mollusca, Bivalvia) from the Southern North Sea Basin Naturalis

Mytilus antiquorum J. Sowerby, 1821, is recorded from the Coralline Crag Formation of East Anglia (UK) and the Lillo Formation (Oorderen, Kruisschans and Merksem members) of the Antwerp area (Belgium). The species is diagnosed on the basis of newly collected material and differentiated from modern European mussel species. The presence of M. antiquorum in the southern North Sea Basin is restricted to the Middle (Piacenzian) and early Late Pliocene (Gelasian). A possible occurrence of the species in the latest Pliocene of northern Greenland is discussed. New records of Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau et al., 1968 (Bivalvia, Mytilidae) boring into Indonesian mushroom corals (Scleractinia, Fungiidae) Naturalis

New observations on endoparasites in mushroom corals at South Sulawesi and Bali resulted in eight coral host records of the mytilid bivalve Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau et al., 1968, bringing the total to 14. The host corals were observed in various habitats, most frequently on sandy substrates. The largest numbers of parasitic bivalves (>10 individuals) were found in large attached mushroom coral hosts of the genus Podabacia.

Population structure and recruitment pattern of undescribed mytilid bivalves that dominate the animal communities associated with vents of the Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen hydrothermal vent fields (37 degrees 17' N and 37 degrees 50' N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) were studied from size-frequency analyses. Intra-site comparisons reveal that length-frequency distributions differ significantly from one location to the other. This spatial segregation of the sizes could be due to spatio-temporal variability in environmental conditions and to intraspecific competition processes, especially adult-larval interactions (competition for space and food resources, intraspecific larviphagy) that could prevent larvae from settling on surfaces covered by adults. This study presents evidence, using sequences of ribosomal 16S and COI mtDNA, for the presence of two mitochondrial genomes in Perumytilus purpuratus. This may be considered evidence of doubly uniparental mtDNA inheritance. The presence of the two types of mitochondrial genomes differentiates females from males. The F genome was found in the somatic and gonadal tissues of females and in the somatic tissues of males; the M genome was found in the gonads and mantle of males only. At the end of 1998 and the beginning of 1999, the golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857), Mytilidae, originating from Southeast Asia, was registered for the first time in the Guaíba Lake Basin, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Quantitative samples were taken since the first register and for two years at various localities in the Jacuí Delta, northern limit of Guaíba Lake, and in the south limit of the later where it empties into Patos Lagoon. Recolonization of experimental gaps by the mussels Brachidontes darwinianus and B. solisianus in a subtropical rocky shore BABT

In this study, the recolonization speed of the mussels Brachidontes darwinianus and B. solisianus was compared to evaluate their responses to gaps opened by disturbances in the rocky shore. B. darwinianus was much faster than B. solisianus, rapidly closing gaps in the mussel bed. When they co-occurred, distribution patterns of these species were related not only with distinct physiological tolerances but also with responses to disturbance. B. darwinianus was more tolerant to low salinities, dominated estuarine zones generally occuring lower in the midlittoral, and presented a faster response to opened gaps.

In the present work, spermatozoa of mussel specimens of the genus Mytella, collected from two populations living in distinct habitats, were examined by electron microscopy. The number and size of mussels Mitilus Galloprovincialis Lam. and Mytilaster Lineatus Gmel. on the riprap of a hydraulic structure (southern pier of Sevastopol bay) was analyzed. It is shown that at this riprap, the distribution of mussels over depth is more determined by abundance of mytilidae larva in the water column, and less – by hydrodynamic effects.
